Why ''givenness''?

We give.

And we are given.

But there is more.  Life is in a constant state of giving and being given.  There is a “givenness” of life.  Just as there is to be a “givenness” of my life, and of yours.

I first realized the profound implications of this word, when professed by Father Prentice Tipton, at his ordination to the priesthood, in December of 2008.

I had recognized "givenness" in the life of Prentice for many years, even though I would never have known what to have called it.  It is only fitting to have heard of this word from him,
because there is no one I have known who has exemplified “givenness” greater.  (You can read more of Prentice, in the first posting of my blog and the dedication of this website.)

I've written for years.  And always struggled to describe what I was writing about.  Until now.

I now know that I write from the “givenness” of my life.  And there could not be a more descriptive word to capture its meaning.

There truly is a "givenness" to each of our lives, though we may not have known what to have called it.  It is my hope that you now will.  And what you and I are "given" to.

Why the coffee cup?

I throughly enjoy coffee.  And everything about the aroma, taste, texture, and flavor. With it, I welcome the “givenness” of each morning and the newness of the day it brings.

Creamer is poured out and dissipates.  To flavor the fullness of the drink.  The imagery is simple, but true to our own "givenness", isn't it?

C.S. Lewis, T.S. Eliott, and J.R.R. Tolkien, (some of my companions in reading), had once gathered as a group of friends called The Inklings.  Why?  To muse about the “givenness” of life and of one to another.  Now so must we...especially while savoring our favorite drink!
